My Story

Jewel is a sweet, 10ish year old girl looking for a very special person to treat her like a queen. She's had a rough life and was actually saved because of an apartment fire. She was accidentally scooped up by a tenant in the destroyed building, thinking she was her cat (a 2 year old momma cat with babies). Luckily, she was surrendered to us once the mistaken identity was discovered. Jewel was filthy with matted fur full of dandruff. She was very skinny, dehydrated and listless. She'd lost her spark and was close to death. Her feet were in horrible shape, with her toenails sticking out at all angles and large scabs on the pads making it painful and difficult to walk. Jewel was given pain medication, fluids, vitamins and recovery diet. She was also bathed and had the mats removed from her coat. Once the vet clinic was open, she had blood work and x-rays done to assess her overall health. She was diagnosed with diabetes. Surprisingly, other than the diabetes, she's in perfect health. The x-rays showed that the bones in her feet are in normal position and no arthritis was seen. Jewel is being treated for her diabetes and has responded well. She's happy, gaining weight, growing in a glossy new coat and has a lovely twinkle in her eyes now. She is sooooo very good for her blood glucose tests and insulin injections. She purrs the entire time and the most difficult part of working with her is keeping her from giving head boops while getting her blood glucose reading. She's on a low carb, canned food diet and a very low dose of insulin. We are hopeful she will go into remission and not need the insulin injections any longer. Jewel's ideal person/people will be able to continue testing her blood and giving her insulin injections every 12 hours. She is fine with cats and probably fine with a well-behaved dog too. While Jewel may need a bit more care, time and money, she gives so much love in return, she'll melt your heart. She's started chatting and jumping onto the furniture and acting like any happy cat. Adults come with updated FVRCCP & Rabies, worming twice, flea treatment, microchip, and spay or neuter complete.
