My Story

Name: Mercury Age: About 6 months Breed: Domestic short hair Reason for being at the shelter: Stray Description: Update: Mercury is blossoming and opening up to more and more contact, especially if offered treats. He accepts a gentle touch but will sprint away if startled. He really enjoys dot chasing. Mercury is developing and improving his social skills and it’s a delight to see. Original story. Mercury displays a lot of curiosity and is quite intrigued with toys and strange things. But he’s not quite ready to let people be one of those things he wants to be in contact with. He likes to keep his distance but edges ever closer to check things out. Mercury was a stray and is very skittish and shy. Obviously, he didn’t get a good introduction to human socialization when he was younger which makes him a little stunted in that department. But he has the potential if given the right environment and the right adopter with love and plenty of patience to work with him. In more close quarters and consistent gentle contact, we hope Mercury will understand that people just want to love on him and to learn to accept it and appreciate it. Are you the adopter who is up for the challenge? Note: Mercury has a little bit of a wobble in his back end. We have discovered that he has a neurological condition called cerebellar hypoplasia. It’s a result of a congenital birth defect. The most common symptoms are jerky or uncoordinated walking, or swaying from side to side. His symptoms are minor. He gets around well but he should never be allowed to go outside. A fenced catio or secure outside area is the best option for him. He really enjoys his catio time at the shelter.
