Bethany came to us about a month ago and was by all accounts a happy. loving, wonderful dog.
After being here for a few days, she came down with what we thought was a urinary tract infection. The vet recommended we have Beth x-rayed for possible kidney or bladder stones. Well, she didn't have either, but what we did find was shocking.
Beth had sustained a horrible injury in her past..most likely a car accident that left her hip shattered. It was also quite clear that she had not received treatment for this injury. She had healed the best she could without medical intervention, but her hip was a mass of scar tissue and pieces of bone..each step must have caused her tremendous pain, but she never showed her discomfort...her temperament remained steadily sweet and gentle.
What to do with sweet Beth? She desperately needed surgery to fix her hip and give her the pain free life she deserves...but as a non-profit rescue...the costs of such an operation would drain our already taxed financial reserves.
Well, Beth must have a guardian angel looking over her, because one of our wonderful volunteers along with the kind and generous help of her wonderful vet's 'Sunshine fund' stepped forward and offered Beth the chance at a new life. Beth received her surgery and is now in the process of recovery. She is so used to pain, that the post operative discomfort and pain appear to be an improvement already..she is doing very well and should be ready to go to find her forever home in a month or so.
Please keep your eye on the site for updates on this wonderful girl!
5/20/09: Bethany's foster mom wrote in to say that, despite possible abuse at the hands of humans, this is one happy girl. She loves people and gets so excited when she meets any on their walks. She just gravitates toward them. She's also had the opportunity to meet a 5 year old and a 3 year old and was great with them, and very gentle. She's a sweet, sweet lady who's looking for a loving home to call her own.
5/5/09 Update: Bethany will be a wonderful family pet. This pretty girl with soulful eyes was found as a stray, wandering and hungry, and she seems relieved that her luck has changed.
She loves to be touched and to lie around and relax. Bethany is a submissive dog happy to follow the rest of the pack, and basically she just wants to be cuddled. She has no aggression at all or any desire to dominate. She gets along great with the resident dogs and cats in the home, actually ignoring the cats completely.
Bethany is learning her leash manners, and she's a smart girl catching on fast. She does not jump up or beg. She is fine with a couple of walks a day and time with her people. She’s a happy dog at a great size, weighing in at just about 45 lbs. She is crate trained and house trained, having had no accidents since arriving into her foster home. Her foster family is enjoying her company very much and they know she’ll find the perfect forever family to call her own.
Notes from our partner shelter: Poor Bethany!! She was rescued by our partner shelter in Arkansas and was found almost starved to death. She is doing alot better now. She is extra sweet and loves everyone, she gets along great with dogs cats and children. She will duck her head alittle when you first pet her as she was probably beaten but there is not one aggressive bone in her body. The vet said she had puppies but none could be found.Bethany is already crate trained, This sweetheart deserves a loving forever home.

This dog is available unless it is marked as Pending, meaning "pending adoption".
If this Dog is marked Urgent, it is because the Arkansas shelter where he/she resides is overfull. Please do not ask local shelters to take this dog in, there are many reasons why they cannot. Please also do not send us letters about why we euthanize, AHR does not euthanize, but the shelters we work with do. We are a rescue and we pull as many dogs as we have foster homes and funds for. We, like the shelter, do not have unlimited resources. Please, please: foster, adopt or sponsor a dog to help save their lives.
FOR PUPPIES: HOMES CONSIDERING PUPPIES MUST BE PREPARED FOR:
FLEXIBLE SCHEDULES FOR POTTY TRAINING-THEY CAN ONLY "HOLD" IT FOR ONE HOUR PER MONTH OF AGE.
CRATE TRAINING FOR THE NEXT 10 MONTHS TO KEEP THEM FROM CHEWING EVERYTHING IN SIGHT.
SUPERVISION WITH CHILDREN, AND OBEDIENCE TRAINING.
SOCIALIZATION-A GOOD DOG MUST BE EXPOSED TO ALOT OF STIMULUS AS A PUPPY SO THAT NEW PEOPLE AND ENVIRONMENTS DO NOT INTIMIDATE THEM AS ADULTS. THE MORE POSITIVE EXPERIENCES -IN AND OUT OF THE HOME- AS A PUPPY, THE BETTER.
HOMES THAT WANT TO HAVE GOOD DOGS, MUST BE PREPARED TO PUT THE TIME AND EFFORT INTO TRAINING A PUPPY. IT IS ALOT OF WORK!!! THEIR BEHAVIOR AND STAGES ARE EQUIVILENT TO A 2 OR 3 YEAR OLD CHILD. IT TAKES A FULL YEAR TO HAVE A CALMER, WELL ADJUSTED DOG! PLEASE DO NOT CONSIDER ADOPTING IF YOU HAVE NOT THOROUGHLY THOUGHT THROUGH THE PROS AND CONS OF A PUPPY...SO MANY PEOPLE END UP RETURNING THEM IN 3-5 MONTHS BECAUSE IT IS CHEWING, JUMPING AND HYPER. THIS IS NORMAL PUPPY BEHAVIOR.
PATIENCE, CHEWIES, SOCIALIZATION, SUPERVISION AND OBEDIENCE TRAINING IS A MUST!!
