My Story

Courtesy Posting: CODE RED IN ORANGE COUNTY, CA (S CAL)- ID #A1870976 - “CHEWY”- A 35 LB PETITE, SHY CHOW BOY, RESCUE ONLY at Orange County Animal Care in Tustin, CA EMERGENCY! NEEDS OUT ASAP PER SHELTER DUE TO SPACE –PREVIOUSLY ADOPTABLE, MADE RO DUE TO NOT WANTING TO BE LEASHED (WAS OKAY BEFORE, AND ALSO WHEN WE JUST SENT A VOLUNTEER TO VIDEO), BUT SADLY NOW AT RISK TO BE EUTHANIZED SOON PLS CONTACT ROBIN FOR HELP OR WITH INTEREST, OR SHELTER DIRECTLY IF YOU CAN RESCUE. HE CANNOT BE ADOPTED FROM THE SHELTER, MUST GO THROUGH A RESCUE GROUP Chewy was found as a stray and brought to the Orange County and is estimated to be only 2 years old, and weighs only 35 lbs. Per a volunteer we sent, he has zero aggression, but like many chows, he is shy and can be aloof, and thus needs a chow experienced foster or home a and rescue to be patient with him. The shelter told us, “When he first arrived to the shelter he would not allow much handling. He took some time to come out of his shell. He has been doing well with staff but still needs some time to show his true personality.” He was made adoptable on 6/18 but then made Rescue only after a meet and greet. Notes state, “6/17/24 Approach kennel, Chewy is at kennel front tail wagging, bouncing, spinning, barking. Open door, easy to leash, C runs out and pulls to bushes immediately. Walk C to grassy area, gets zoomies on leash and tries to run. Take to play yard, easy to remove leash, C circles yard urinating, does not engage with handler, but continues sniffing around yard. Able to approach and pet C all over, touched legs without issue. Able to easily leash and continue walking. C appears interested in dogs, will pull hard to bushes to sniff and mark, does not pay much attention to handler. Greeted kennel staff on walk briefly then disengaged and continues sniffing around bushes. Stubborn, while sniffing, resistant to moving from an area of interest until ready. Return to building, easy to get back in kennel and remove leash, briefly solicits attention, allows scratching and petting, no issues exiting kennel.” However, days later, Chewy suddenly no longer wanted to be leashed, making the shelter change his status to Rescue Only and notify us: “He is currently rescue only and needs to find placement as soon as possible as we are extremely full. We have not been able to test him with other dogs, but here are his shelter notes for behavior. Video https://youtu.be/QmjUxB4Ppl4. “ As you can see in the original video, he is calm, sweet, non aggressive, and approaches the kennel fence. When we sent a volunteer on 6/23 to meet him and video, she said, “No aggression. Zero. Only mild interest in people and things walking by (we were in one of the playyards). The guy walking him said Chewy probably trusts him as much as anyone. He him put the leather slip lead on him and take it off. And followed him around the yard. No trouble with me taking the leash and walking with me. He’s a typical chow who will almost certainly be okay allowed to decompress and learn to trust. Typical chow. Aloof. No interest in treats. No desire to interact but no reaction when I reached out with a treat.” We are therefore looking for a patient foster or foster-to-adopt. Sadly, Chewy must be Rescued soon, or will be euthanized. The shelter already told us he will be given a deadline soon. We are therefore in desperate need of a foster, as rescues need a place for a dog to go. This is his former listing link but he can no longer be adopted by the public, you must go through a rescue group: https://24Petconnect.com/DetailsMain/ORNG/A1870976 Rescues may call (714) 935-6848 and (714) 796-6425, and email [email protected] and [email protected] in the Rescue Department and mention his ID. More information may be found on the rescue track at www.ocpetinfo.com We can also provide you with full behavior notes. He has no noted medical issues. The shelter may neuter him for a foster and rescue group. If you may be interested in fostering or helping, please contact [email protected] asap or Southern California Chow Chow Rescue Network who can try to pair fosters with a rescue group. We will post any updates, additional pictures or video on his facebook page at: https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=10165540935278125&id=783968124 Note: to view the contents of the links you will need to copy and paste each one separately into your browser.
