My Story

11/23/08 Update: Stunning, beautiful, gorgeous cocker spaniel!!!

WOW, this Cookie is an amazing cutie!! His foster family is in love and feel so blessed to be able to help him along his way to a perfect forever home. He’s beautiful, silky soft, and sweet beyond belief.

Cookie was wonderful with the 2 year old, 5 year old, and 11 year old kids that he met. He climbed up in the chair with the 5 year old in the photo you see here, and let her pet him and be with him.

He is also great with his foster mom's cats, by which we mean he ignores them for the most part. He is FULLY house-trained and was obviously a family dog at some point, since he is so trusting, loving, and affectionate. He is at ease with his foster family's three resident dogs. He fits right in to the busy household.

Cookie is not used to a leash but he’s responding very well to guidance. He is also learning to sit and stay. He’s a smart little guy, eager to please and he’ll catch right up once he settles in to the routine. He is playful like a puppy but smart like an adult dog. We think he's at least three years old. This delightful little gentleman deserves a wonderful forever family. Could that be you?

Here’s Cookie!

Cookie was found on the streets on 10/7/08. Isn't he gorgeous????? He looks to be a pure-bred cocker (though we cannot confirm that) and we are amazed he has not been claimed. He must be a victim of the economic times.

We estimate him to be between 3-5 years old, and he weighs appx 30 lbs. He is very friendly and affectionate -- just loves people!

Cookie is medium-high energy. He loves to take walks, play, run, and be active. He is not a couch potato. He is very people focused, and likes to give kisses, cuddle, and be petted. He can be a bit cautious when he meets new people – not scared, just cautious – but warms up quickly, and then becomes your best friend.

He seems to be housebroken – we think he must have been someone’s pet – though could surely use a refresher course. He seems, also, to know simple commands. He is a fairly vocal dog and does like to bark, so would not be a good apartment pup.

He loves other dogs and likes to play, though he can be dominant with male dogs. He likes cats and has lived with them. He does chase the cats, but it is in a playful way. If you have a dog-savvy cat, we think he would do fine. If your cat is not so dog savvy, or is older, Cookie might be too much for them.

He has been exposed to kids, and while he has done fine, he has not spent a great deal of time with them, so we are really unsure how he would do living with small children. For this reason, we think he would do best in a home with kids 10 and up (who are more likely to have good doggie manners).

Cookie has gotten loose from the shelter once, and it took a few days to find him – so he would NOT be a good off-leash dog (at least, not right now). He needs to bond with his new home and know that he is going to be living there forever before he can be trusted off-leash (please remember, some dogs can NEVER be trusted off leash, no matter how bonded they are).

Cookie is a great dog, who is looking for a home who can give him love, affection, stability, exercise, and attention. Can you be that home? All known information is listed here. If it is not listed here, then we do not know if this animal is good with cats or kids. This dog is available unless it is marked as Pending, meaning "pending adoption".

If this Dog is marked Urgent, it is because the Arkansas shelter where he/she resides is overfull. Please do not ask local shelters to take this dog in, there are many reasons why they cannot. Please also do not send us letters about why we euthanize, AHR does not euthanize, but the shelters we work with do. We are a rescue and we pull as many dogs as we have foster homes and funds for. We, like the shelter, do not have unlimited resources. Please, please: foster, adopt or sponsor a dog to help save their lives.

FOR PUPPIES: HOMES CONSIDERING PUPPIES MUST BE PREPARED FOR:

FLEXIBLE SCHEDULES FOR POTTY TRAINING-THEY CAN ONLY "HOLD" IT FOR ONE HOUR PER MONTH OF AGE.

CRATE TRAINING FOR THE NEXT 10 MONTHS TO KEEP THEM FROM CHEWING EVERYTHING IN SIGHT.

SUPERVISION WITH CHILDREN, AND OBEDIENCE TRAINING.

SOCIALIZATION-A GOOD DOG MUST BE EXPOSED TO ALOT OF STIMULUS AS A PUPPY SO THAT NEW PEOPLE AND ENVIRONMENTS DO NOT INTIMIDATE THEM AS ADULTS. THE MORE POSITIVE EXPERIENCES -IN AND OUT OF THE HOME- AS A PUPPY, THE BETTER.

HOMES THAT WANT TO HAVE GOOD DOGS, MUST BE PREPARED TO PUT THE TIME AND EFFORT INTO TRAINING A PUPPY. IT IS ALOT OF WORK!!! THEIR BEHAVIOR AND STAGES ARE EQUIVILENT TO A 2 OR 3 YEAR OLD CHILD. IT TAKES A FULL YEAR TO HAVE A CALMER, WELL ADJUSTED DOG! PLEASE DO NOT CONSIDER ADOPTING IF YOU HAVE NOT THOROUGHLY THOUGHT THROUGH THE PROS AND CONS OF A PUPPY...SO MANY PEOPLE END UP RETURNING THEM IN 3-5 MONTHS BECAUSE IT IS CHEWING, JUMPING AND HYPER. THIS IS NORMAL PUPPY BEHAVIOR.

PATIENCE, CHEWIES, SOCIALIZATION, SUPERVISION AND OBEDIENCE TRAINING IS A MUST!!

. We pay a Transportation Service from Arkansas to bring the dogs to New England. The adoption fee is $250.00 for altered dogs. $350. for unaltered puppies, with $100 refundable after spay/neuter. All Senior dogs 6 years or older have a reduced adoption fee of $200. This includes vaccinations, spay/neuter and transport from Arkansas to Maine on a USDA approved transport, with a Health Certificate. All dogs are quarantined 14 days prior to leaving Arkansas... All dogs will be tested for Heartworm prior to adoption. Almost Home Rescue will process your adoption.
