My Story

The rescue of Eddie has been recognized by Friends of Flicka (www.flickasfriends.org). This organization was created in memory of a beloved golden retriever for the purpose of offering financial support to organization and individuals who help companion animals in need. They have provided us with a matching grant of $2000.00. This is absolutely awesome, yet we need your help in raising $2,000.00 by December 31, 2007 to achieve the matching grant.

Checks can be sent to PALS, PO Box 123, Grinnell, IA, 50112 and put Eddie or Matching Grant in the memo of your check. Of course this is a tax-deductible donation and we will send you a receipt! Thank you!!

Eddie is blossoming! Eating well, behaving like a gentleman in the house, has finished all his dogtor work, and is ready to go home with a special family. Please call or e-mail PALS to see about making this amazing boy a part of your life.

EDDIE'S STORY - updated through Nov 4

Sat. Sept 29:
I wanted to let you know that we received a call on the PALS phone today from a family who had a stray dog collapse in their front yard. They had seen him a time or two before this, but he would not let them get close to him. As you can see he is severely under-weight has lost most of his hair and not in good shape at all.

The vet on call was very nice and I took this kid to him today. He is an intact, senior Irish Setter, red in color, if he had hair. He had a slight fever, we cut the burs and brush off of him, and we did skin scrapings (no mites, which is great, but will recheck Monday). He is going to get food, fluids, de-wormed and antibiotics over the weekend. On Monday the Dr will perform standard blood work. His eyes are swollen and pussy, so they were cleaned, too. Poor guy! You can see his entire spine, every rib and every bone. I bet he does not even weigh 30 lbs and should easily weigh 70 lbs.

The dogtor will keep us informed on the test results and when he is able to check out of the hospital. The sweet guy already started to attach and did not want to be left at the dogtor's office.

Tue. Oct 2:
Good news on Eddie's bloodwork - all normal with the exception of a slightly elevated white blood cell count, and no heartworms! He began eating on his own over the weekend and was released from the hospital today. :)

Wed. Oct 3:
Eddie had a great night. He curled up on the couch and he ate very well. He was standing on his own and walking when I picked him up yesterday. He was so much better, just from Saturday. He just puts his head on my lap, when I go in to see him. And, he did well with his bath too. He has a good pile of medicine with antibiotics for 21 days, medicated shampoo for his skin/hair, and oral medicine for mange. Although they did not find active mites, they are still treating him for the mange. We also have eye wipes as his eyes are crusty, especially in the AM. He is learning to do his business outside and he seems to be excited about having the other dogs around. His skinny, no-haired tail wags and he whines with joy when they are around him. It is cute.

He actually tried to go for a walk today, stinker. I took the leash off of him right at the door, paused to open the door and he was headed around the house. I had to chase him down. Obviously, he has spirit. :-) I will take pictures weekly so we can track his progress.

Tue. Oct. 9:
"Wow, I believe this has been the very best 10 days, I have had in a very long time," says Eddie! He has made excellent progress and it is great to see and experience him, for who he is, and not the frail guy he had become. Eddie is thriving and has no known health ailments. He has put on weight, actually eating us out of house and home, but that is ok, he was without for way to long, when he was on his own. :-)

He has a great personality! What a lover and so gracious. He is patient, responsive and obedient. Although resting and hanging out at my feet, while I work, are his favorite activities, next to eating....he does have a lot of spirit and spunk in his step and tail. His hair is starting to come back in and we all are looking forward to seeing him with his full coat soon. We are going to let him gain more weight and strength, but then will schedule him to be neutered and have another check up with the Dr, in just a few weeks.

Sun. Nov. 4:
Eddie's hair is continuing to grow in, tho none in his tail yet and we can't wait to see that! :) He is down to somewhat more normal eating quantities - 2.5 cups twice a day, and is wonderful to watch when he eats - he lies down and really enjoys his food.

Eddie is the perfect gentleman with everyone here in his foster home - which includes a 2-yr old 2-legged kid, 3 small dogs, and one very hyper mid-sized dog. He puts up with them all, even the hyper girl and one of the little ones who is very cranky. :) In fact, the only thing Eddie is NOT a perfect gentleman around is chickens...the chicken is going to be fine, but Eddie won't be going on any more barnyard adventures, tho he definitely had a blast running around!

We'll update again pretty soon when we check his weight - meanwhile, feel free to call or e-mail PALS about him as he is ready to come home!

Eddie's adoption donation is $85 and includes his neuter, deworming, and shots. Please call or e-mail the PALS contact information located below to find out more about making this sweetheart a part of your family!
