My Story

6/10/07: Georgia is in foster care in ME! Update 6/11: Georgia is a very loving little girl. She is very active and loves to play. She will hide her treats when you give them to her and if you see where she put them then she will go and move them. She is not a barker and will only bark when she hears strangers or sometimes at night when she sees a shadow. She is excellent with our 4yr old daughter and our 3 cats. She wants to play with them but they do not feel the same way! Georgia would be great with agility because she is so active. She learns commands very quickly and already sits when told, is learning how to stay and give paw. She does still pull a little on the leash but stops when you correct her. She rides excellent in the car and enjoys it. Georgia would do best in a home either as an only dog or with a dog similar to her size. Because of her energy and still being a puppy she can overpower a smaller dog like our cairn. She loves to play and wrestle. Georgia has eaten out of the same bowl as our other dog with no sign of aggression at all. She does not seem to be food aggressive or possessive--just a sweet girl. The family that adopts this beautiful girl will receive tons of love in return as she loves to give kisses and just be with you. She will lay next to you and sleep and with more training she will be a perfect companion for any family or active person.

Update from Georgia's foster 5/17/07: She is sooo sweet. I can already tell that she is a very active girl. I think she would make a great pet for an active family that is willing to work off extra energy with daily walks. She would be great in the sport of frisbee - she has a really stong vertical jump, and is a very fast runner - so flyball is a good option for her too! She is very intelligent and loving. I think that because of her activity level and intelligence she can get bored easily and get into negative behaviors, so some obedience training would be helpful for her too.

I would not recommend her for families with especially young children - because of her activity level they could hurt her too quickly or she could knock them over very easily with her constant activity. She would be GREAT with a family with older children and I think she could live well with a family that has other medium to bigger dogs for her to play with. She loves to play!!!

I've already noticed a couple of cute quirks about her - she likes to hide her food, and when she is play fighting with my 35 pound lab mix she is so excited she has the habit of audibly "popping" her teeth together. Interesting!

Georgia is a terrier/shepherd mix weighing around 20 pounds. She is around 6 to 8 months old and is black and white. Very sweet dog, loves to play and loves to be petted. She can also dance on her back feet, just like her playmate, Stacie, that she gets along great with. Please help us find her a home.

All known information is listed here. If it is not listed here, then we do not know if this animal is good with cats or kids. Before sending an inquiry, please read the How To Adopt Page & FAQ pages of our website. http:www.almosthomerescue.net. This dog is available unless it is marked as Pending. For PUPPIES: SEE BELOW

This dog is Urgent because the shelter it is in is in Arkansas and is overfull, therefore dogs and puppies alike are on the euthanasia list. Please do not ask local shelters to take this dog in, there are many reasons why they cannot. Please also do not send us nasty letters about why we euthanize, this is not our choice, we do not euthanize, but the shelters we work with do. We are a rescue and we pull as many of them as we have foster homes and funds for. We, like the shelter, do not have unlimited resources. Please, please: foster, adopt or sponsor a dog to help save their lives.

HOMES CONSIDERING PUPPIES MUST BE PREPARED FOR:

FLEXIBLE SCHEDULES FOR POTTY TRAINING-THEY CAN ONLY "HOLD" IT FOR ONE HOUR PER MONTH OF AGE.

CRATE TRAINING FOR THE NEXT 10 MONTHS TO KEEP THEM FROM CHEWING EVERYTHING IN SIGHT.

SUPERVISION WITH CHILDREN, AND OBEDIENCE TRAINING.

SOCIALIZATION-A GOOD DOG MUST BE EXPOSED TO ALOT OF STIMULUS AS A PUPPY SO THAT NEW PEOPLE AND ENVIRONMENTS DO NOT INTIMIDATE THEM AS ADULTS. THE MORE POSITIVE EXPERIENCES -IN AND OUT OF THE HOME- AS A PUPPY, THE BETTER.

HOMES THAT WANT TO HAVE GOOD DOGS, MUST BE PREPARED TO PUT THE TIME AND EFFORT INTO TRAINING A PUPPY. IT IS ALOT OF WORK!!! THEIR BEHAVIOR AND STAGES ARE EQUIVILENT TO A 2 OR 3 YEAR OLD CHILD. IT TAKES A FULL YEAR TO HAVE A CALMER, WELL ADJUSTED DOG! PLEASE DO NOT CONSIDER ADOPTING IF YOU HAVE NOT THOROUGHLY THOUGHT THROUGH THE PROS AND CONS OF A PUPPY...SO MANY PEOPLE END UP RETURNING THEM IN 3-5 MONTHS BECAUSE IT IS CHEWING, JUMPING AND HYPER. THIS IS NORMAL PUPPY BEHAVIOR.

PATIENCE, CHEWIES, SOCIALIZATION, SUPERVISION AND OBEDIENCE TRAINING IS A MUST!!
