update 11/07/09: Henry, a 1 year old hound mix, had a great time at the adoption event on 10/31 and is looking forward to the next one on Nov. 21st (The Kennel Shop, Scarborough ME). Having grown up in a shelter for his first year of life, Henry benefits from lots of positive social experiences and someone special to help him become a completely secure boy. A total love bug – Henry loves to cuddle, be patted and be close to his special people. He also LOVES to play – especially with balls. Although he doesn’t give them back, he does love to chase balls around until he is absolutely exhausted. He plays very well with other dogs – and does extremely well with dogs close to his size and smaller. He loves to be outdoors – walking, sniffing, and just “chilling” with his people. He is very quiet, and rarely barks except for alarm barking when visitors arrive. Henry would do best with someone who is willing to be patient and work with him to overcome his shyness and anxiety about meeting new people. His first year was spent with lots of other dogs – he is very dog socialized and very secure with other dogs. He hasn’t met enough people in his life to realize that they will be gentle and loving with him and that the world is not a scary place. Henry has come a long way while in foster care – is very well behaved, house trained, very gentle and has learned to sit and lie down. He is very smart, and would love to go to school with his new family. He is a dog who wants to please his people.
update 10/26/09 Henry is doing very well in his foster home. He has mastered housetraining and gets along well with the other dogs in the house. Henry loves tennis balls – but must have a minimum of three – two for his mouth and one to chase around the house. With less than three he will destroy (and potentially ingest) them. He also loves his new rubber bone – for aggressive chewers. It's been over a week and he hasn’t managed to destroy it. Henry is going to be at the adoption event on Saturday (10/31/09).
update 10/5/09: There’s nuttin’ like a hound dog – Henry Higgins is doing great in foster care. Even though he is surely a hound dog – he is a very quiet one, typically only barking for visitors or strange noises around the house. He has learned how to sit, and is starting to learn the command to lie down. He is about 95% housetrained and loves to ring the bell hanging on the door when he wants to be outside. He walks fairly nicely with a training collar – and loves to play with the other dogs. While he has done excellent with dogs smaller than him or slightly larger than him, he is very intimidated with dogs twice his size.
Henry has met a few children and has done well with them. He is a bit nervous in general as his life has had a lot of change and may do better with older children who can be respectful of his space. He is very shy when he first meets people, and does best when the visitor ignores him until he is ready to interact with them. He is excellent about going into his crate for the price of a cookie – and loves to snuggle in soft blankets. Henry truly enjoys being outdoors – especially with all the new smells of fall. Chasing leaves and bugs are an excellent pastime in Henry’s book – they are so much fun to pounce on and he smiles as he plays. He loves balls and other toys that bounce and move. Although he’s not totally sure about a game of catch, he does love to chase the ball on the ground (he doesn’t quite bring it back though). Henry has come a long way since arriving in Maine about a month ago, has learned about dishwashers and stairs, and even the furnace. He is a sweetheart of a dog, just wanting to be with and please his people
Update 9/1/09: Heeeeere's Henry! Henry Higgins arrived in Maine last weekend and is loving life. Curious and attentive, Henry is quickly learning about all the new noises that come with living in a house - the washing machine, dishwasher, fridge, furnace, and vacuums - none seem to scare him, although he does cock his head and listen intently. His favorite time of day is going for a walk - he smiles and wags his tail the entire time. He also LOVES to PLAY - he's not a high energy dog, but playtime is fun. He is learning that rope toys are great to shred and that rough house and tug of war with his foster doggy siblings is a blast! He also loves human attention, and likes to know where his people are. Henry is not crazy about getting into his crate when he knows people are leaving for a while - but he will grudgingly enter and take his cookie. He has only had a few accidents the first couple of days at his new place, and is catching on quickly to house training. He is also learning to sit on command for a piece of cheese. Very smart, devoted and loving - this gem of a sweet boy is just waiting to be discovered.
