My Story

Heeere’s Izzy!

Izzy (formerly Janice) is 11-12 months old. She weighs about 50lbs. She is a beagle /Shepard mix and we seem to think Shepard is more dominant in that she does not run off and likes to protect her home and family. She has been through dog training for sit, stay ,come, down etc. We have also done extensive training with crawl, rollover, sit pretty, waits for a command to eat and to exit the home or car. She has been trained to ring a bell to go and knows many nonverbal gestures. She is all crate trained. She does well in a car and on a boat and likes the water. She is a very smart dog and trains easily. She is such a great dog and loves to give lots of kisses.

Izzy has spent the last few months with a wonderful family… but… Izzy is a bit too much for the little children in the family. Izzy is an alpha dog and has adjusted to the adults in the family being in charge of her…. But not the kids. She is gentle and sweet! But does not understand that kids are in charge of her, too. She will need to be in a family with children 13 years of age or older, as she will overpower a smaller child.

Izzy is used to 4-5 mile walks, and needs them – she is a high energy dog! She is immature in her play with children and jumps and uses her mouth on them. This is simple puppy playing – but can be scary for little kids, and as she is a strong, young dog. She can be vocal about her chew toys, but has shown no signs of aggression. She will do anything for food!. She has the most personality I know for a dog and will make the right person a perfect pet.

She is very loyal to her pack. She is accustomed to playing with other dogs, but will let some know she is alpha. She is a sweet heart! Just a powerful 1 year old puppy who wants to play!

Janice is in foster care in ME -- here's an update from Janice's foster! 5/14/07

Janice is here and she's a love!!!!! Janice rides in the car good. She walks on a leash pretty good (we used a harness when going for walks). She is great with other dogs and loves cats (Dan & I joke that maybe she was raise by cats the way she is with them). She loves to play with dog squeaky toys. Potty training isn't too bad but she still has a couple of accidents. We crate her at night and once the house is quite for the night sleeps all night. She loves to run around and play. She is about 15 lbs - 20 lbs but loves her food and seems like she will stay on the medium size dog.

Janice and her siblings were surrendered to the shelter on 03/24/2007. Janice is around 3 to 4 months old and weighs 15 to 20 pounds. Janice had a sweet face and loves to sleep!!!! Please help us find her a home.

NEWS FROM FOSTER 5-6-07: Janice is a very sweet dog, my 6 year old daughter leash trained her. She is great with children and other dogs. She is fine with cats too. She would be great in a household with other pets, her sister got adopted and she misses her so much.

All known information is listed here. If it is not listed here, then we do not know if this animal is good with cats or kids. Before sending an inquiry, please read the How To Adopt Page & FAQ pages of our website. http:www.almosthomerescue.net. This dog is available unless it is marked as Pending. For PUPPIES: SEE BELOW

This dog is Urgent because the shelter it is in is in Arkansas and is overfull, therefore dogs and puppies alike are on the euthanasia list. Please do not ask local shelters to take this dog in, there are many reasons why they cannot. Please also do not send us nasty letters about why we euthanize, this is not our choice, we do not euthanize, but the shelters we work with do. We are a rescue and we pull as many of them as we have foster homes and funds for. We, like the shelter, do not have unlimited resources. Please, please: foster, adopt or sponsor a dog to help save their lives.

HOMES CONSIDERING PUPPIES MUST BE PREPARED FOR:

FLEXIBLE SCHEDULES FOR POTTY TRAINING-THEY CAN ONLY "HOLD" IT FOR ONE HOUR PER MONTH OF AGE.

CRATE TRAINING FOR THE NEXT 10 MONTHS TO KEEP THEM FROM CHEWING EVERYTHING IN SIGHT.

SUPERVISION WITH CHILDREN, AND OBEDIENCE TRAINING.

SOCIALIZATION-A GOOD DOG MUST BE EXPOSED TO ALOT OF STIMULUS AS A PUPPY SO THAT NEW PEOPLE AND ENVIRONMENTS DO NOT INTIMIDATE THEM AS ADULTS. THE MORE POSITIVE EXPERIENCES -IN AND OUT OF THE HOME- AS A PUPPY, THE BETTER.

HOMES THAT WANT TO HAVE GOOD DOGS, MUST BE PREPARED TO PUT THE TIME AND EFFORT INTO TRAINING A PUPPY. IT IS ALOT OF WORK!!! THEIR BEHAVIOR AND STAGES ARE EQUIVILENT TO A 2 OR 3 YEAR OLD CHILD. IT TAKES A FULL YEAR TO HAVE A CALMER, WELL ADJUSTED DOG! PLEASE DO NOT CONSIDER ADOPTING IF YOU HAVE NOT THOROUGHLY THOUGHT THROUGH THE PROS AND CONS OF A PUPPY...SO MANY PEOPLE END UP RETURNING THEM IN 3-5 MONTHS BECAUSE IT IS CHEWING, JUMPING AND HYPER. THIS IS NORMAL PUPPY BEHAVIOR.

PATIENCE, CHEWIES, SOCIALIZATION, SUPERVISION AND OBEDIENCE TRAINING IS A MUST!!
