My Story

THIS DOG IS NOT IN THE LAWRENCE COUNTY HUMANE SOCITY SHELTER. THIS IS A COURTESY LISTING FOR ANOTHER RESCUE GROUP. Jayne was rescued locally, where her placid, sweet face and cuddly relationship with her Bernese Mountain Dog playmate induced her foster mom to rescue both of these precious girls. On 4/7/04, when getting her initial vetting after rescue, Jayne weighed 53.3 lbs. and was estimated to be about 3-4 years of age because of some wear on her front teeth (although worn down teeth can be the result of extensive kenneling). When she was spayed on 4/12/04, she had gained a couple of pounds--probably because she was into gestation with 4 puppies, which was a surprise. She was aborted as part of the surgery. Based upon her mammary glands, it was conjectured that she probably had been bred over and over during her few brief years. Bless her heart, she felt pretty bad after this major surgery; but her misery was made worse by the end of the day when she began exhibiting symptoms of a bad upper respiratory infection that she obviously had started incubating while with her friend Bernice who also got sick. If her respiratory infection had evidenced itself hours earlier, she would have been sent home without spaying until she finished 10 days of a strong antibiotic; and, by that time, she would have been within 10 days or less of delivering her litter. And it could always be worse in this "valley of heartworms"; she could have been heartworm positive but wasn't, thank goodness. It was a toss up whether to classify Jayne as a purebred or mixed Golden Retriever since she "looks like, talks like, and chews bubblegum like" a purebred Golden; but, since her foster mom is not an expert on Goldens, she decided to go with the "mixed" designation to avoid misleading anyone just in case she is not purebred. Jayne stands just 22" tall at the top of her back and measures 24" from the base of her neck to the base of her tail. Jayne has the typical calm, laid back, sweet Golden personality. She is very good around other dogs (and still has an exceptionally warm and loving relationship with Bernice the Bernese) and is fine with cats but probably would be okay as the only canine member of a family. In fact, she probably would be fine if her human family works days as long as she is safely secured inside the home. Houstraining could use a little work but should be relatively easy with this smart girl. For bonding and safety's sake, obedience training is always recommended for any new addition to a family and definitely establishes a base of verbal communications. Jayne has been heartworm tested, started on heartworm preventative, vaccinated and spayed. Now this wonderful little lady needs a wonderful permanent home to share her life and sweet memories for the next decade or so.
