My Story

Donate to the PALS Doggy Digs Fund!
The Poweshiek Animal League Shelter is raising funds for a dog housing expansion at the shelter. Money raised will enable construction of a 30 by 50 foot addition, which will house PALS dogs. It will include new indoor and outdoor kennels, and will give dogs freedom to come in and out of the building, all while staying safely contained.
Not only will this greatly benefit the dogs, but it will also benefit the cats, as the cat room will be moved to the current dog room, giving much more space for playtime. The cat room will be converted into a much needed isolation room.
Simply PayPal to [email protected] or mail your check to PALS, PO Box 123, Grinnell, IA 50112 - note that your donation is for the Doggy Digs Fund!
THANK YOU!!

PALS has helped over 900 animals in the past five years and all of them are special and deserve forever homes. And, we do our best to accomplish this for them every day, one animal at a time. Yet, to be honest, we all have those individual animals that touch our hearts and leave us a better person because of their existence and presence. LeRoy is one that touched many of our hearts over the past several months. He came to us in early February as a stray. He was extremely under-weight and had been in the bitter cold alone. And despite his damaged and frail body, he still greeted us with a loving-spirit. LeRoy went into foster care and experienced the basics...food, water, shelter and comfy dog beds. In addition, he experienced love, attention, and human care. Unfortunately, LeRoy's body is giving out on him. We estimate him to be twelve years old, so truly a senior guy. He continued to have his loving-spirit and we know he has appreciated these past few months. At the same time, his bad, hard days much out-weigh the good moments. He is the type of dog who has your attention and heart, way before he says hello. Thank you LeRoy for coming into our lives! Thank you for letting us care for you these past few months. We know you will be playing ball, chasing the birds/geese and loving the green grass in doggie heaven! We will miss you!

And thank you to his special foster family for giving him months of love, attention and a special place in your home and hearts!!!

Leroy crossed over the bridge today, May 21, 2009.

==========================================
Meet sweet and wonderful LeRoy, a true survivor! We do not necessarily expect LeRoy to be a "special needs" dog for the rest of his life, but at this point, considering the condition he arrived in, we are indicating that as he does need special care right now. Please read about LeRoy's arrival at PALS below.

Meanwhile, we are happy to update that his is recovering beautifully - he tested negative for heartworms and is eating well, and is up and about, in and out of the house. We are not sure what breed he is but we are guessing brittany spaniel - he has spaniel spots and a long coat, and the vet estimates him to be at about 8 years old. He is not neutered yet but will be able to undergo the operation as soon as he gets a little more weight on him. We are all enjoying this special guy's sweet, sweet personality!

From foster care, Feb 16: "We have had no accidents with LeRoy and he is in the house full time. I have been able to get him out when he gets up and begins to pace. That is the signal. HA! He is doing very well. Sleeping, eating, and begging for more attention...does not get any better then that! He is such a sweetie. Someone deserves to love this guy!"

This is the story of LeRoy's arrival at PALS:

Mon Feb. 2 -
We received a call about a stray dog on the PALS phone tonight during our board meeting. Due to the urgent nature of the situation, a PALS volunteer was able to make the trip to pick him up and get him into foster care immediately.

LeRoy (the name we have given him) is not in good shape. He is extremely under-weight, weighing in at 30 lbs. You can feel every bone in his body when you pet him. His long hair actually hides how skinny he really is. His teeth are not good and he has not had food for some time, as when he ate, he vomited it before it even had a chance to go down. We have slow fed him tonight and he has eaten about 3 cups so far. He can hardly hold himself up and walk. He curled up on a dog bed and is sleeping away. He cannot even stand to poop, he went lying down. He is in need of a good bath, but we will wait a few days to let him get some nutrition and fluids first. He will be meeting with the vet tomorrow!

UPDATE Feb 12:
LeRoy was at the vet today. He had an open wound behind his ear due to scratching hair mats. They stitched it up and shaved the hair so it would not bother the area. He is doing very well. He gained 9.5 lbs this past week. He continues to eat on his own throughout the day and we plan to continue this for a few more weeks. He still is very thin and has little to no muscle tone on his hips or back legs. He walked up the stairs on his own, with minimal help today. And, that was a first. He had only been able to go up 2-3 steps and then could not hold his weight. He sits in my office during the day and we are working on the potty-training. He has such a sweet personality. We will need to get him vaccinated and neutered, but first want to get him over 50 lbs before we do that. He is only at 38.5.

LeRoy's adoption donation is $95 which includes his neuter, microchipping, deworming, and shots. Please call or e-mail the PALS contact information located below to find out more about making this sweetheart a part of your family!
