Niko

Say Hello to Niko! Nico is a 1- to 2-year-old cuddle bug who is very handsome, high-energy, fun-loving, goofy, and lovable.  He loves to play with his dog friends and is awesome about taking cues from other dogs on what type of play is acceptable. He also likes to play with his human friends and use his toys to occupy his time. After a good play session or a long walk, this sweet boy is content to lay next to (or on top of!) his humans and get lots of love and a good nap. He is talkative and opinionated in a funny, sassy way but will hush if he knows you mean it. He is not cat-safe and is very prey-driven. He has not been tested with kids but would probably do well with older ones he can’t knock over when playing. We do not know if he is crate trained as his foster family is home most of the time, and they haven’t had to crate him. He’s a fast learner who didn’t get a lot of training early in life but is very smart and quickly making up for lost time. Things Niko is learning now is not to be a chewer.  Toys are fine, but leather items are not! He needs a bit of monitoring with this as he may try to sneak a shoe chew. He probably would love a treat puzzle or a snuffle mat to keep his mind active and not dreaming of leather goods. We know that “out of sight, out of mind” helps keep leather goods safe. He’s learning that counter-surfing is a no-no and that calmly greeting new friends is polite. He also needs a bit of leash training, as it’s SO exciting to go for walks! A slow-feeder is recommended as he gulps his food but is not food-aggressive. Niko knows basic commands and seems to enjoy learning new ones. He is also very food motivated. His foster Mom is working on “wait” now. He is overcoming some separation anxiety that he came to us with but having at least one other canine sibling for the company has helped curb it. The perfect home for this diamond in the rough is an active person or family who will work daily to tire him out and mentally challenge him physically. Having another active dog in the home would be preferable for his love of play, and a sibling to help maybe mentor him. Although Niko is a work in progress, he is well on his way to being a great dog and a fabulous companion. If you are interested in adopting, please complete and submit an adoption application.
