My Story

Update 10/27/08: Six-month-old Polly Pocket has made the long trip to foster care in New England, and she's eagerly awaiting her forever home. This beautifully brindled girl weighs in at just under 50 pounds and she's extremely well socialized. Polly was found abandoned at the tender, pre-weaning age of 4 weeks and raised as a bottle baby. She's grown into a happy, playful girl who thrives on attention.

We usually have to guess about any shelter dog's breeding. Vets who have met Polly see Plott hound, maybe some boxer, perhaps some Great Dane somewhere in the family line, but who knows for certain!

Polly's foster mom thinks Polly would do very well as a family dog. She met visiting 2 and 4 year old children over the weekend and did great. She's shown no aggression to her foster family's kitten, and she plays well with the other dogs. She loves being petted and cuddled and she likes everyone.

Like most playful pups, Polly has a good amount of energy. Her foster mom describes her activity level as "the high side of medium." She would do well in an active, or semi-active household where she would have regular opportunities for exercise. She'd love to go for walks or have another dog to romp and run with, but she's NOT one of those dogs who needs to be in constant motion.

Polly loves having toys to play with, and sometimes tear apart! She has shown some possessive behavior with her toys with her foster family's young resident puppy, but she lets her foster mom take away a toy with no problem.

Polly sleeps in her crate at night, and appears to be house trained. She has not had an accident and seems to know that outdoors is the place to go. Her foster family lets her out frequently.

Polly is learning to walk on a leash and go in her crate on command. she already knows how to sit when asked.

This lovely girl seems trainable, easy-going, happy, devoted to her people and ready to go home! She's going to make some lucky family a terrific companion.

Notes from our partner shelter: Here’s Polly Pocket!

Polly was found on 6/3/08 at about 4 weeks of age. She was abandoned at a local park. She was bottle fed until she was of weaning age. She loves to cuddle, be petted, and LOVES to play – she is particularly playful with toys. She also loves to swim. She is a licker and loves to give kisses.

She is in a foster home and sleeps with her foster parents. She is very socialized and is not fearful of any new situations. She rarely barks and is learning her leash manners. She is not yet housebroken (working on it).

She plays with her foster family’s cats and does not show any kitty aggression. She has not been exposed to kids but we think she’d be fine as she’s been socialized since she was so little.

Overall, Polly is just a VERY happy girl – she will make a wonderful (BIG!!!) pet for a lucky family!

This dog is available unless it is marked as Pending, meaning "pending adoption".

If this Dog is marked Urgent, it is because the Arkansas shelter where he/she resides is overfull. Please do not ask local shelters to take this dog in, there are many reasons why they cannot. Please also do not send us letters about why we euthanize, AHR does not euthanize, but the shelters we work with do. We are a rescue and we pull as many dogs as we have foster homes and funds for. We, like the shelter, do not have unlimited resources. Please, please: foster, adopt or sponsor a dog to help save their lives.

FOR PUPPIES: HOMES CONSIDERING PUPPIES MUST BE PREPARED FOR:

FLEXIBLE SCHEDULES FOR POTTY TRAINING-THEY CAN ONLY "HOLD" IT FOR ONE HOUR PER MONTH OF AGE.

CRATE TRAINING FOR THE NEXT 10 MONTHS TO KEEP THEM FROM CHEWING EVERYTHING IN SIGHT.

SUPERVISION WITH CHILDREN, AND OBEDIENCE TRAINING.

SOCIALIZATION-A GOOD DOG MUST BE EXPOSED TO ALOT OF STIMULUS AS A PUPPY SO THAT NEW PEOPLE AND ENVIRONMENTS DO NOT INTIMIDATE THEM AS ADULTS. THE MORE POSITIVE EXPERIENCES -IN AND OUT OF THE HOME- AS A PUPPY, THE BETTER.

HOMES THAT WANT TO HAVE GOOD DOGS, MUST BE PREPARED TO PUT THE TIME AND EFFORT INTO TRAINING A PUPPY. IT IS ALOT OF WORK!!! THEIR BEHAVIOR AND STAGES ARE EQUIVILENT TO A 2 OR 3 YEAR OLD CHILD. IT TAKES A FULL YEAR TO HAVE A CALMER, WELL ADJUSTED DOG! PLEASE DO NOT CONSIDER ADOPTING IF YOU HAVE NOT THOROUGHLY THOUGHT THROUGH THE PROS AND CONS OF A PUPPY...SO MANY PEOPLE END UP RETURNING THEM IN 3-5 MONTHS BECAUSE IT IS CHEWING, JUMPING AND HYPER. THIS IS NORMAL PUPPY BEHAVIOR.

PATIENCE, CHEWIES, SOCIALIZATION, SUPERVISION AND OBEDIENCE TRAINING IS A MUST!!

. We pay a Transportation Service from Arkansas to bring the dogs to New England. The adoption fee is $250.00 for altered dogs. $350. for unaltered puppies, with $100 refundable after spay/neuter. All Senior dogs 6 years or older have a reduced adoption fee of $200. This includes vaccinations, spay/neuter and transport from Arkansas to Maine on a USDA approved transport, with a Health Certificate. All dogs are quarantined 14 days prior to leaving Arkansas... All dogs will be tested for Heartworm prior to adoption. Almost Home Rescue will process your adoption.
