Sidney (formerly Si/Am) is a very versatile and irresistible little lady and will do well in many types of homes. She was very shy when she first came to our home. She was very timid but bonded very quickly to me and she seems to be on an invisible tether to my ankle. She will love her person and will be very happy to have sole custody of someone's lap but is happily sharing my lap with my mini. She is about 10lbs of a gangly chihuahua/pug (?) mix and probably full grown. She's long legged but small boned - she's a tiny bit taller yet more fragile than the cats. I think her pictures make her look bigger than how petite she is. However, her size did not prevent her from hiking up and down hills and rocks for over an hour in the woods. I was prepared to carry her but she had no trouble what-so-ever with hiking and did well on her leash too. She pulled because she wanted to be with the other 6 dogs hiking with us. In the yard, she does quite well on a leash.
After two days here, she's coming out of her shell and I think we're seeing the 'real' Sidney and she's just a doll. She's a great combination of playful, sweet and cuddly. Her tell never stops wagging -- she LOVES living in a home and having her own family!! She is SUCH a happy dog. Just a smiley, tail-wagging, love bug! She's content with playing with her squeaky toys, playing with my resident mini or trying to engage the cats to play with her. If no one is interested, she curls up for a nap (right now, she's curled up against me). She's doing well with her crate with some fussing when she first goes to bed but settles down in a few minutes after lights-out. This girl has the bladder the size of an elephant in her compact body! Somehow, she sleeps at night for 8 hours with no accidents!!! Except for one accident on day 1, she seems to be housetrained.
She is nervous and submissive when anyone makes a movement towards her and is still intimidated by the big dogs. I don't know if she'd adjust to small children for this reason. (Due to her nervousness around small kids and tiny size -- 10/11 lbs -- we will only adopt her to families with kids over 8 years old -- for her safety, and for the kids' safety
). But whoever her companion is, she is going to be completely devoted to him/her
Update from Si and Am’s foster 6/13/07!
Si and Am have been with us for just over a week. They are very sweet dogs and so fun to watch. They play together all the time. My daughter, Margaret is 8 yrs old and is the caretaker of them. She is able to do everything with them, including giving them their daily meds (post surgery). They are a little shyer with me, but come willingly to anyone who comes in the yard. We have had several smaller children here that were very afraid of animals and both children ended up petting both dogs and tolerating the dogs by their sides. They are energetic and both have that puppy look to them because they are so small. Am is about 15 pounds and has white whiskers on his chin. Si is smaller (10-12 pounds) and is all black. They bark at any animals that come in site, but ignore our big Lab. in the fence next to them. My oldest daughter came home to visit for a week and brought her lab and older terrier and they have played well with them. The new kitten has been tolerated, but Si did nip at her several times and we have not let them together for long. They have been in the house several times for short periods of times without accidents or destruction. They want in every time we open the door and scratch at the door wanting attention when they see us walk by. They have dug in the yard in a few spots, but it has been very hot here, so I really wouldn't call them "diggers". They have been very fun to have.
Si and Am were surrendered to the shelter on 05/14/2007. Si is 7 months old and weighs appx 9 pounds. Si is a very sweet and gentle dog and loves her sidekick Am. They remind me of the 2 siamese cats in the Walt Disney Movie. They are very fast and love to run and play.

This dog is available unless it is marked as Pending, meaning "pending adoption".
If this Dog is marked Urgent, it is because the Arkansas shelter where he/she resides is overfull. Please do not ask local shelters to take this dog in, there are many reasons why they cannot. Please also do not send us letters about why we euthanize, AHR does not euthanize, but the shelters we work with do. We are a rescue and we pull as many dogs as we have foster homes and funds for. We, like the shelter, do not have unlimited resources. Please, please: foster, adopt or sponsor a dog to help save their lives.
FOR PUPPIES: HOMES CONSIDERING PUPPIES MUST BE PREPARED FOR:
FLEXIBLE SCHEDULES FOR POTTY TRAINING-THEY CAN ONLY "HOLD" IT FOR ONE HOUR PER MONTH OF AGE.
CRATE TRAINING FOR THE NEXT 10 MONTHS TO KEEP THEM FROM CHEWING EVERYTHING IN SIGHT.
SUPERVISION WITH CHILDREN, AND OBEDIENCE TRAINING.
SOCIALIZATION-A GOOD DOG MUST BE EXPOSED TO ALOT OF STIMULUS AS A PUPPY SO THAT NEW PEOPLE AND ENVIRONMENTS DO NOT INTIMIDATE THEM AS ADULTS. THE MORE POSITIVE EXPERIENCES -IN AND OUT OF THE HOME- AS A PUPPY, THE BETTER.
HOMES THAT WANT TO HAVE GOOD DOGS, MUST BE PREPARED TO PUT THE TIME AND EFFORT INTO TRAINING A PUPPY. IT IS ALOT OF WORK!!! THEIR BEHAVIOR AND STAGES ARE EQUIVILENT TO A 2 OR 3 YEAR OLD CHILD. IT TAKES A FULL YEAR TO HAVE A CALMER, WELL ADJUSTED DOG! PLEASE DO NOT CONSIDER ADOPTING IF YOU HAVE NOT THOROUGHLY THOUGHT THROUGH THE PROS AND CONS OF A PUPPY...SO MANY PEOPLE END UP RETURNING THEM IN 3-5 MONTHS BECAUSE IT IS CHEWING, JUMPING AND HYPER. THIS IS NORMAL PUPPY BEHAVIOR.
PATIENCE, CHEWIES, SOCIALIZATION, SUPERVISION AND OBEDIENCE TRAINING IS A MUST!!
