**PLEASE GO TO OUR HOME PAGE TO FILL OUT THE ONLINE APPLICATION! Stella's was bought as a puppy from a breeder. Her elderly owner is now disabled and no longer able to take care of her. So she is with the Waverly Pet Rescue and in a foster home. She was already spayed and is now up-to-date on shots, dewormed, Frontline applied, ears cleaned, nails trimmed, and heartworm tested negative. She has a small lump on her tail and a medium sized one on her hind end. The vet said they are cysts, common in bassets as they get older, and nothing to worry about.
Stella is about 8 years old. She only weighs 28 pounds. She needs to put on a little bit of weight because she is too skinny. She does have a petite frame and is a smaller sized basset. She is a sweet and very freindly. She loves attention and to be where you are. We were told she is housetrained. She has done great so far and is 100% crate trained. She had an accident the first day she was here but that is very normal for a dog in a new home. She does well in her crate and goes in there easily. The only time she whines or barks in there is when she hears my husband up in the early morning going to work. She then barks to say, hey, here I am! Come pet me! So I get up, let her out to go potty, I go back to bed and she settles back into the crate again until I get up an hour or two later. She is really good with our dog. He is an older poodle and they are friendly to each other. Her first day here, they were checking each other out and he had her nose in her rear WAY too long and she did quick growl at him to tell him stop it. He has not done it since and no problems at all being around each other. I have 3 cats and she didn't pay any attention to them at all. I have 2 young children and she is good with them. (ages 5 and 2) She enjoys being around them and having them pet her. Even though she is 8, she is full of spunk and doesn't act like a senior dog at all. It seems as though Stella was not fed properly in her previous home. She eats her food about 100 miles an hour and is always looking for more. When I picked her up from the owner, he was feeding her donuts! goodness! She is only eating dog food here and no people food. I put her in her crate while we are eating because I am sure she would want table scraps and that is so bad for her. So easier for me to just not let her realize we are eating. Our garbage is put away so I don't know this for sure, but my guess would be that if your garbage is out in the open, she would be one that is going to dig thru it to find something to eat. Since she is a basset hound, she will need a fenced in yard or to always be on a leash or tie out. She does enjoy being outside and sniffing around. And if given a chance, she would run like the wind chasing down all the scents that basset nose of hers can smell! Stella is truely a great basset and I love the breed. I am hoping another basset lover out there wants to give her a forever home and give her a more stable life than what she had in the past. She would make a great family pet!
11/16/09 UPDATE: Stella has been in our home for 1 week now. She is doing really well. She wants to be with the family all the time and likes to be where we are. I no longer have her in her crate during the day because now she is barking when she is in there to let us know she wants to be where we are. I do have her eat in her kennel while we are eating because her every minute is to try and find food. I feel she sure didn't get enough to eat in her previous home because she is so skinny and because of how she acts. Hopefully in time she will realize she is always getting another meal. At night, I still keep her in her crate. She barks for awhile but then settles down. I have found it best if her kennel is next to you so that she knows you are there. She loves belly rubs! She is so friendly and good with my young children too!
11/19/09 UPDATE: Stella has really settled in and her personality has come up. She is such a good dog. No accidents in the house at all since that first day. She enjoys being whereever I am and will follow me around. She doesn't demand attention but sure perks up when you give her some. She wags her tail and gets so excited and is so happy! During the day she spends most her time next to me on the floor sleeping. She has a slight snore and is so cute! Sometimes she will go in her crate on her own to sleep in there. At night, we have her go in her crate and she is even learning to go in there when I tell her. I get a treat out, point at the kennel and say "kennel Stella" and she will go right in and then I give her the treat and shut the door. She has been quiet all night long now in her crate. She really enjoys my children and will run around and play with them. She is friendly to our dog and she ignores the cats. She is an easy dog to have around!
12/7/09 update: THE LUMP ON STELLA'S TAIL HAS TURNED INTO A CYST FULL OF FLUID. THE VET SAID HE COULD LET THE FLUID OUT BUT THEN IT WOULD JUST KEEP COMING BACK. HE SAID IT WOULD BE BEST TO REMOVE IT. SO SHE IS GOING IN FOR SURGERY 12/8 TO HAVE THIS DONE. IT IS LOCATED TOWARDS THE TIP OF HER TAIL AND SINCE THERE IS SO LITTLE SKIN ON THE TAIL, HE SAID THEY MIGHT END UP HAVING TO JUST AMPUTATE PART OF HER TAIL SO IT CAN HEAL AND NOT RISK IT GETTING INFECTED. THIS WILL COST $150 - $200. WE REALLY NEED HELP TO PAY FOR THIS. PLEASE SEND TAX DEDUCTIBLE DONATIONS TO: WPR, PO BOX 291, WAVERLY, IA 50677. OR CLICK ON THE SPONSOR ME LINK ON HER PROFILE. THANKS!
12/10/09 DUE TO THE BLIZZARD, STELLA'S SURGERY HAS BE RE-SCHEDULED FOR NEXT WEEK. (TUESDAY, DEC 15TH)
12/17/09 UPDATE: STELLA IS BACK HOME NOW. SHE HAD HER SUGERY YESTERDAY. THEY ENDED UP HAVING TO TAKE MOST HER TAIL AND THERE IS ABOUT 6 INCHES LEFT. SHE HAS A BANDAGE WRAPPED AROUND IT AND SHE LEAVES IT ALONE. SHE GOES BACK IN SATURDAY SO THEY CAN LOOK AT IT AGAIN AND CHANGE THE BANDAGE. IN 2 WEEKS HER STITCHES CAN COME OUT. SHE IS HAPPY TO BE BACK HOME, THAT IS FOR SURE!
Will someone please adopt Stella and give this sweetie a true forever home? $75.00 adoption fee. (her vet bill came to about $75, that is why her adoption fee is $75)
